Living Well by Fairview
The Living Well workshop series is a program that was developed by Stanford University to find practical ways to deal with conditions such as diabetes, arthritis, high blood pressure, heart disease, chronic pain and anxiety, among others. People with different health problems attend the same class together. Caregivers are welcome to attend, but are expected to participate in the class.
The two and a half hour classes are conducted once a week for six weeks and are lead by two trained peer leaders, one or both of whom are non-health professionals with at least one chronic health condition.
Living Well classes teach skills needed in the day-to-day management of chronic health conditions to help maintain and/or increase quality of life. Subjects covered in the class include:
- Techniques to deal with stress, pain, anger, depression, fear, and frustration
- Appropriate exercise for maintaining and improving strength, flexibility, and endurance
- Medication responsibilities
- Effective communication with family, friends, and health professionals
- Nutrition and healthy eating
- Decision making
- Goal setting
